I stumbled across a website yesterday from the SAD forum run by the company that sells lightboxes in the UK.
Now I'm not going to publicise their website, that is in fact their job and if they wish to advertise on my site well I'll be happy to receive their advert.
What I do wish to put across for all those people who suffer somewhat unnecessarily a bit like me from depression and skin diseases arthritis and all sorts of modern diseases that we just don't have the answer to, is that we do have an answer.
The remedy that we have is Omega3 essential fatty acids, namely Eicosapentaenoic acid and Docosahexaenoic acid EPA and DHA for short.
Now purely as a coincidence I started taking Fish oil omega 3 supplements when someone I knew told me it was good for my psoriasis and he told me that he was taking four a day ( more than the one they suggest for you on the packet) and that his psoriasis was clearing up so I jumped on the bandwagon and started it myself but I have also noticed that since that time I am much better in myself but its taken a while because I must have been so deficient in EPA and DHA when I started taking them.
I got an email from him at the end of September and looking back to my posts it is only a few weeks later that I started to recover fully despite being on two antidepressants at the top dose.
I was reading yesterday about this piece of original research
In the 1980s, omega-3 essential fatty acids hit the news in a big way because of a discovery by Danish researchers involving the Inuit’s living above of the Arctic Circle in North America,
Two things interested scientists about the Inuit’s: their unique diet, and their health. The Inuit diet is rich in cold-water fish and the fat of whales and seals. From such a massive fat intake, and a comparative lack of fresh fruit and vegetables, the scientists expected to find high levels of heart disease among the Inuit people. Yet the Inuit’s have unusually low levels of heart disease – and very low levels of rheumatoid arthritis as well.
They also do not suffer with depression even though they have long periods of night as they live above the Arctic circle.
When the scientists looked more closely at their diet, they discovered that the fish eaten on an almost daily basis by the Inuit people contains large amounts of omega-3 fatty acid EPA. Further research has led to a consensus amongst scientists that a diet high in EPA fish oil – especially cold-water varieties such as salmon, sardines and mackerel – significantly reduces the incidence of heart disease.
This led to the extraction of omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil supplements, to make it easier for people all over the world to include these essential nutrients in their everyday diet.
Now the research is there but do we listen, do we hell!
Since taking the fish oil I've started to lose weight because my Seasonal affective symptoms have started to go away. I wake up in the morning bright and bushy tailed and ready for the day. I sleep like a log and wake up after 6 hours refreshed and bright and in a content frame of mind.
Why is this the case? It harks back to our ancestors stone age man where the concentration of omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids in the body was 1:1
We are now hearing about research in to fatty acids for treating mental illnesses
You don't need research; you need to eat a diet rich in omega 3. What do you do not need to do is supplement omega 6 because we get plenty of in in sunflower oil, and the usual suspects corn oil and the cheap vegetable oils such as rapeseed and canola and the " supermarket vegetable oil" in fact we get plenty such that the ratio of fatty acids in most people taking a western diet is omega 6 20: 1 omega three
It also proves that the Mediterranean diet rich in fish and extra virgin olive oil which is the best vegetable oil for you means you don't get heart disease either and live longer.
In fact I would hazard a guess that all the people who live to be over 80 eat fish or have eaten fish at least once a week, that or they like their sardines on toast.
We need to restore the balance to 1:1 again and that is my thought for the day to get you thinking about your diet and how you can for a few pounds get decent EPA and decent DHA levels.
Always buy the stuff that has more EPA to DHA
The supermarket capsules You can take up to 10-12 a day of these and no they wont make you fat.. They'll make you shine and another useful result will be that your skin wont ever get wrinkly..apparently when the body is short on Omega 3 which it uses to make cell membranes it starts using Omega 6 instead but Omega 6 membranes don't function as well as Omega 3 based cell membranes.
Tell me have you ever seen an Inuit woman of 80 (they look remarkably well preserved)
So go out and help yourself to some pure fish oil (I don't recommend eating lots of fish because of the mercury levels in them. Most fish oil companies filter out and purify the fish oil so that the mercury isn't present.)
As a result of extensive clinical trials, EPA has been found to be beneficial for:
* Lower cholesterol
* depression
* bipolar disorder
* schizophrenia
* OCD
* Low moods
* Heart health
* Huntington ’s
* Concentration
* ADHD
* ADD

People should be aware of both the risks and benefits of seafood. The decision of what fish to eat can be a challenge and often contradictory. At the very least, people should know that FDA and EPA have issued advisories about mercury contamination in commonly-sold fish. The problem is, this information is hard to find and is not usually available where it is most necessary: your supermarket.
Oceana, a conservation group, is trying to get major grocery companies to post this government advice at their seafood counters. Thanks, in part to their work, Whole Foods, Safeway stores, and Wild Oats voluntarily agreed to post the FDA’s recommendations and they have had positive responses from customers and no loss in seafood sales. But other companies like Costco and Giant Eagle have refused to do so. Oceana has a list of which companies care about their customers’ health enough to post this advice, as well as a list of companies that don’t. You can get the Green List and Red List at their website.
Good post. There are also good alternatives for vegetarians such as flax seed oil and walnuts.
Interesting post.....modern society has certainly changed some of the equations in our environment and bodies that kept us healthy in the past....I think I'm going to check this out...
thanks...

Thanks for leaving comment over on mine.Will certainly take this up - probably flaxseed oil which I used to take as fish oil sensitivity.
Thanks for this, it is an interesting read. I wonder if you provide some links to the original research? As you say the text you quote is from a company selling Omega-3 oil, and they don't link to the research either.
A quick check on PubMed shows some studies and analysis that give an indication of efficacy, but are inconclusive. Unfortunately, I am at work at the moment, and I have just moved house so don't have my internet connection set up.
I came across fish oils and O3 fatty acids in 2000. My reason, my son is dyslexic, and at that time very little was available.
via various sources I found a US doctor doing trials with O3 and O6 fatty acids in Newcastle.
He found that kids with ADD and dyspaxia and dylexia were being helped by adding O3 and O6 fatty acids, in some cases the ability to learn was increased 10 fold.
Yep My colleague in Australia prescribes omega 3 for ADHD.
